Does Font Matter?

Choosing a font for a design can be hard. Does it matter in design? Yes! The font you choose for a design can make or break that job. There are a variety of factors associated with font such as psychology, readability, color, and design. We can’t physically talk about all aspects of font in one blog, but we can try.

Mood and Psychology

How does a font have mood? The elements around the font and the content of the text makes the mood and overall theme of that design. If you have a professional letter being sent out, you aren’t going to use a font such as Arial Black. If you are sending out wedding invitations, you are not going to want to type the invitation in Bell Gothic. Type styles such as Times New Roman are viewed as traditional fonts that are respectable and reliable. Sans Serif Fonts are viewed as stable fonts that are clean and objective. If you are needing an elegant and affectionate font then a script font is where you need to look. Modern fonts are stylish and strong, and display fonts are the fonts that are unique. Here are a few examples:

Serif Fonts

What is a serif font? The serif is describing the ends on the letters, as pictured below. Serif fonts are seen on diplomas, in paragraphs in books, and professional design. Serif fonts are typically found in longer reading printed materials. These are also the most commonly used fonts, they look old, and are very neutral fonts.

Sans Serif Fonts

Sans serif simply means without serif. Sans serif fonts are great to use for on screen designs.  These fonts do not have a tag or flag on any of the letters in the fonts. They are great for headings and pair with serif fonts for the body. These fonts are also called Gothic.

Script Fonts

Script fonts look more creative and have more emotion. These fonts have more curves and are also elegant. Many invitations for formal events will use script fonts.

Modern Fonts

Modern fonts are strong, progressive, and stylish. These fonts express intelligence, determination, and they are very eye catchy. Modern fonts have a vertical stress as well.

Display Fonts

These fonts are usually specifically made for a company and what they are needing. Usually the fonts in this category are attached to a specific company, theme, movie, organization, etc. These fonts are fun, unique, and casual. Be careful when using these fonts because the organization, movie, or event the font is already tied with can also affect how the content of your text is viewed.

How do I choose what kind of font I want to use for my design?

1.Who is your audience?

When thinking for the font to use, are you creating it for kids? Or is your design going to be seen by young adults? Treat the font that you use for a design the way you would advertise for a company.

2.What is the brand of the company or organization? What is the personality of the individual that is needing the design?

Knowing the personality can help when choosing a design. If it is a design needed for a social media coordinator, then look at their brand and see what type of personality they have. When designing for a company, make sure to look at who they are, what the feel of their company is so that everything aligns.

3.What is the design being used for?

Are you designing for party invitations, for a sale event, for a closing store poster, for a social media post about your latest product, etc. Whatever you are designing for need to be taken into consideration before creating the design.

4.Is the font readable?

There might be rare occasions where you do not need a completely legible font because it is a part of a logo that is not the main core needed to be read. But, in most settings, a readable font must be present.

There is so much that goes into choosing a font that many people might not see it. Many might say, “Just pick a font and move on.” But this type of thinking could hurt the event, brand, organization, and how the design is viewed. We could go on and on about fonts and how to use them, but we will leave it at this for now. We didn’t even get to the fun of font with glyphs, so stay tuned on our social media for another fun font post.
