The Different File Extensions?

File extensions can be confusing, and there are way over 100 file extension types. There are too many to explain, but here are a few of the most popular file extensions you will see and what they mean.

Raster images are resolution dependent, pixel-based graphics, and used for photo and web graphics.

Vector images are lines, polygons, curves, and other shapes that are graphic representations of mathematical objects.

Raster Image file types:

JPG (Joint Photographic Experts)

These are used by many digital cameras to save pictures, and these files are used for websites and to print pictures.

PNG (Portable Network Graphic)

These files are typically transparent with many colors, and there is lossless compression that resembles a .GIF file.

RAW

A RAW file is unprocessed data. Everything from a RAW file has not been altered in any way, but the most popular RAW file is from digital cameras.

GIF (Graphic Interchange Format)

A GIF is used for animation and transparency. Therefore, these files are animated for a second or two and has grown to be one of the most common image formats used on the internet. In addition, these files are very fun for social media.

TIFF (Tagged Image File Format)

TIFF files are loss-less format used for high-quality raster graphics.

PSD (Photoshop Document)

PSD file extensions are a layered file, and is a professional picture editing program. Photoshop files allow you to edit digital photos and graphics. Additionally the next person that receives the file can adjust layers, layer masks, keywords, and other elements. In other words, this file extension is perfect for graphic designers.

Vector Image file types

PDF (Portable Document Format)

A PDF file extension are print files and web-based documents. Adobe Acrobat created the PDF file extension. Additionally documents and publications are created. Save as a PDF to make sure the document cannot be altered on the receiving end. PDF files save the document in a standard form. For instance, these files are great for sending resumes.

EPS (Encapsulated PostScript)

The EPS file extension are individual vector design elements found in Adobe Illustrator. Typically, this type of file contains text and graphics.

AI (Adobe Illustrator)

Adobe Illustrator is an editing program for graphics and use paths connected by points. In addition, Adobe Illustrator creates logos, business card designs, postcard designs, and much more for your business. Having the actual adobe illustrator file allows you to manipulate the graphic anyway you would like. In other words, these are perfect to send to your graphic designer.
