Is Print Dead? Part 1

We live in a world now that is almost fully digital. We look at the news on our phones, we watch television for entertainment, we look at applications on our devices for the weather, and it seems that we do not use print at all anymore. The internet has taken over many tasks that in the past we would have used paper for. Book stores are closing down because more people would rather read off of their Kindle or ipad then have a library full of books.

“Okay, we get it. But why are you talking about how print is dead if you are a printing company?”

While printing may have decreased in production, there are still many products that are overlooked that have to be printed. The fact is that print is not dead, and here are 10 reasons why. There are way more reasons than the list below, but we will save the other half for another week.

1. Signs used for outside

One thing that many of us over look is that someone has to print the signs that we see on the road. Stop signs, traffic signs, town signs, signs that say “exit here”, all of this is print. We pass these signs every day driving.

2. Billboards

Some people might say that billboards are dying, but there is still a wide population that looks at billboards while driving or riding in a car. Billboards are a way to reach audiences such as the baby boomers who might not be on the internet as much as Millennials or even Generation X.

3. Car Magnets

Car magnets are still used for many different reasons. Some people use car magnets for decoration. Businesses such as Uber or Grub Hub use car magnets to show that those vehicles are indeed with their business.

4. Displays in Stores

Retail might be dying but stores still use displays to help advertise products in their store. Even when retail completely dies, grocery stores will still need displays.

5. Product Packaging

Every single product that is bought online has a package it comes in. Businesses use the packaging to advertise other products, make the product itself look better, or use it to put text that has to be on the product for regulation.

6. Labels

Labels used on products such as laptops, bottles, hats, jars, cans, bottles, and the list goes on and on. Labels can be used to put nutrition facts of food, put the chemicals used in a product, instructions on how to use a product, and many different options.

7. Hang tags and Price Tags

When you go to the store, do you notice the tags on every product? There are tags on everything in the store. Those tags have to be printed somewhere… Little things such as hang tags and price tags can be overlooked when discussing if print is dead.

8. Stickers

Many campuses, work places, and special events have stickers for cars. Sticker permits for cars are not out of the ordinary, and many colleges make stickers mandatory for a car to be allowed on campus. Another scenario where stickers are used are for voting. Stickers could be printed to show their support for a specific candidate.

9. Invitations

Invitations are still printed too! What if one of your co-workers told you about their wedding, but they did not give you a personal invitation… would you feel offended? Printed invitations are still a formal way of telling people that you want them to attend the event you are having.

10. Letters

Letters are still used in many scenarios. Acceptance letters, job offers, letter for a nomination, or anything you can think of. Letters are still used as a formal way of telling someone something important.
